Being Faith Lead in the Year Ahead - Janell Sorensen

Being Faith Lead in the Year Ahead

Every time the New Year approaches our email boxes, social media news feeds, and NY Best Seller list are always filled with the Top 5 ways to be the very BEST you in this New Year.  Top 5 ways to declutter and simplify.  Top 5 ways to be a stellar homeschool parent.  Top 5 ways to slim down and get strong.  Top 5 ways to be more successful in business.  Top 5 ways to consolidate debt and become debt free.  The lists, articles, and blog posts go on and on about planning for success, creating your best life, and living a life of design. THIS is how to be your BEST YOU in the upcoming year!

The thing is, we forget the Creator of all things who gives life, has already drawn up plans for us and has a specific purpose for us.  In the imperfect day-to-day’s He IS doing His work to make you the BEST you…through Him!

 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD, (Jeremiah 29:11-14a)

These books, articles, and tips aren’t bad things as we aspire to be better stewards of our body, mind, time, and possessions, but may we not forget to first pray and seek God first and foremost.  Are we seeking God with ALL our heart regarding the changes that need to be made in our life, body, relationships and finances?  Are we asking Him first if these are the things He has for us in our life calling? Or are we making decisions and resolutions based on things that we feel others think we should be doing?  Are we striving for Pinterest Perfect and Facebook Fabulous, or are we desiring holiness and righteousness offline?  Everything we say “yes” to ultimately gives a “no” to another area or other people in our lives.  Are we praying for wisdom, discernment, and direction?

Though culturally the New Year is a great time for reflection, adjustments, and change, the awesome thing about being a child of the King is that we don’t have to wait until January 1st to start over.  We don’t even have to wait until Monday as God and His grace are available to us minute by minute and day by day.  When we fail to follow through perfectly with our resolutions, we can know where our hope lies and we can find rest and satisfaction in our God who is faithful to change us.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”  (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)

With all these resolutions, they tend to be rooted in who we are (or hope to “appear” to be), what we would like to be known for, and what legacy we want to leave. In Hebrew 11 we see the “Great Wall of Faith”.  It is this awesome list of people who did great acts of faith in their lifetime.  All their acts of faith were in God and what He had uniquely designed for their lives.

  • Abel- Offered the best parts of a lamb as a sacrifice to the Lord. (Gen. 4:1-6)
  • Enoch- "truly loved God". (Gen. 5:21-26)
  • Noah- Believed God’s warning that God was going to destroy the evil people of the world in a flood. Built a large boat (ark) as God commanded to save his family and animals. Gen. 6:1-9:17)
  • Abraham- Left the comfort and security of his homeland, when God called him to go to a new land where God would give him many descendants.  (Gen. 12:1-9, 17:1-8, Rom. 4)
  • Sarah- Was too old to have children, but she had faith that God would give her a child anyway. (Gen. 18:1-15, 21:1-8)
  • Isaac- Gave a blessing to his sons Jacob and Esau. (Gen. 27:1-40)
  • Jacob- Blessed his grandsons (Joseph’s sons) Ephraim and Manasseh. (Gen. 48:1-22)
  • Joseph- Used his position in the Egyptian government to save his family when they went to Egypt during a time of famine in Canaan. He also trusted that God would lead the Hebrew people of Israel out of Egypt. (Gen. 37-50, 50:22-25)
  • Moses- Refused to be considered the king’s grandson; led the Hebrew people out of Egypt; and celebrated Passover. (Exodus 1-15, 19-34)
  • Rahab- Helped two Israelite spies escape Jericho so they could make a report to their commanders. (Joshua 2:1,3; 6:21-25)
  • Gideon, Barak, Samson, & Jephthah- Performed acts of heroism and helped the Israelites to gain control of the land (Canaan) promised to Abraham and his descendants. (Judges 4-16)
  • David- Slew the giant Goliath and helped the Israelites to conquer Canaan. (1 Samuel 16-1 Kings 2:11; 1 Samuel 17)
  • Samuel- Led the people of Israel as a judge and prophet. 1 Samuel 1:1-1 Sam 25:1)

These men and women weren’t out creating and designing life for themselves and their glory, yet they were ordinary everyday people with sin struggles just like you and me who needed a Savior and sought the Lord.  Who followed His leading and truly LIVED the life that was already designed for them.  It’s so amazing if you take the time to go back and read about these people.  They mess up, they accomplished great acts of faith through God, but some even missed out on blessing and opportunity.  This wasn’t a list of perfect people.  It wasn’t a list of the most fashionable of 2016, the wealthiest of 2016, the most fit of 2016, the most organized, successful, etc.  These normal everyday people God saw fit to use were imperfect and willing to step out by faith and live the life that was tailor made for them.  I’m pretty sure “Save my Family during the Famine” was not on Joseph’s New Year’s resolution list.  Yet God had brought Him to that very place to be available to do the unthinkable.  Just think where God might place you this year if you are only willing and listening?

So, as we prepare our hearts, thoughts and time for the New Year, may we seek eternal things, Kingdom things.  May we seek God and His righteousness and these things will be added unto us.  He truly will lead us by faith!  As we slow down and seek Him first, may we hear from Him and see in His word what He is calling us to.  May we be Spirit lead and have wisdom and discernment to know what our best “yes’” are for our home, our family, and our ministries.  May we take it one day at a time as we continue looking up.  Then we can boldly and faithfully step out in the power of the Holy Spirit and do mighty things for His Honor and Glory!

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:33-34)

Community News - Week 11

Good Morning BGCC Families!  Here's a quick week 11 update for you.   I'm looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Community Christmas Dinner:

This year BGCC is having a Medieval Christmas Dinner.  We decided rather than hosting our Christmas Dinner potluck style this year,  we are asking each family to donate $20 so we can serve one big feast.  Our menu includes roasted root vegetables, chicken, bread, and pies - Yum!  If you're interested in helping out with food prep please talk to Jennifer Locey or Ann Ordway as they are heading this up.

There won't be a formal program but we will have some fun activities throughout the evening. Students may choose to dress up for the event, Medieval costumes are encouraged but not required.  :)

Science:

On week 12 students will be doing a science project that requires toilet paper rolls.  I've been saving rolls at our house all quarter but I don't have enough for every student.  Can you collect your TP rolls over the next week and bring them with you to CC on week 12?  Thank you!

Follow the Star:

If you signed up for Follow the Star, I'll be bringing your tickets to CC tomorrow.  I do have 4 tickets left for December 11, at 5:00pm.  Let me know if you would like them for your family.

Weather:
The forecast shows snow tomorrow.  I'll be watching the weather tomorrow morning and will post to the blog and Facebook if it seems that the weather is unsafe to travel in.

Community News Week 7

Good Afternoon,

I hope you enjoyed your week off from CC.  These built in breaks are such a blessing to our family, we had a wonderful time together at Outdoor School last week!  After a week away from the daily grind, I'm not feeling rested in body but I most definitely feel rested in spirit and I hope you are too.  Here's a passage to lift your heart today.

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise  Psalm 95:1-7

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
 For the Lord is a great God,
    and a great King above all gods.
 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

For he is our God,

    and we are the people of his pasture,
    and the sheep of his hand.

Land for Kizza:
By now I'm sure you've heard from many of the families that attended the Twin Rocks Outdoor School and the overwhelming excitement to host a fundraiser this Sunday for Kizza and his Let The Children Come ministry in Uganda.   To learn more follow the link below.
http:/SupportKizza.wixsite.com/Fundraiser  Please consider coming to the fundraiser!

What to bring this week:
Don't forget your tin whistles this week!

Don't forget to practice your memory verse at home!

Community News Week 5

Fundraiser for Kizza-October 30th, 2016
As I'm sure most of you have seen on Facebook, we are having a fundraiser this Sunday for a wonderful children's resue ministry in Uganda run by Kizza and Regima Godfrey.  Several of our families felt our hearts tugged and called to helping this family after spending the week with Kizza at ourdoor school and hearing of his immediate need.  You can read more about his story on our BGCC Facebook page or at this link  http://supportkizza.wixsite.com/fundraiser.
Many of you have asked how you can help, what can you bring?  Below is the link to Sign-up Genius and we are hoping that we as a CC Community can adopt this family and be the hands and feet of Christ by providing food and serving at this event.   I thank you in advance for your generosity and willingness to step up and serve and above all, ask you to be praying for all involved.

Here is a little tidbit of history I copied from their website. Feel free to read more about this historical Mill before you go.
“The Cedar Creek Grist Mill is a working museum, showing visitors the inside workings of a grist mill of the 1876 time period. It is the oldest building is the state of Washington that is still doing the job that it was built to do 126 years ago.”
It will be a whole lot of fun to get together with the younger foundations group as well.

Rafiki Paka's Timeline Videos

Some of you have asked for more info/help on finding Rafiki Paka's Timeline videos. There are a few ways to access them. (You DO have to be a paid member of CCC to access them the first 2 methods below)

1. If you go to ClassicalConversations.com and log in, you can then come back to this page and click on the following link: Rafiki Paka's Timeline Videos

2. Log into your account at CCC. Hover over "CONNECTED" at the top far right of your screen, and select "FOUNDATIONS LEARNING CENTER" under "Subscription Services". Then find and hover over "LEARNING CENTER" in the blue bar in the middle right of your screen.  A menu will drop down. Select "WEEKLY TIMELINE VIDEOS"  at the bottom.
**NOTE: The option "Timeline Videos" in this same drop down menu takes you to different set of timeline videos. Rafiki Paka's are shown at the very bottom of the menu options.

If you are NOT a CCC subscriber, you can access the videos via Vimeo.com. Success has been minimal when attempting to access them via smartphones. PC's have much better results.

3. Visit Vimeo.com, search for "Rebekah McNary" in the search bar. Look to the far left on the next screen and you will see "PEOPLE" in the 'Show Results For' menu. Click on PEOPLE. Then on Rebekah's name. Next, select " 3 ALBUMS" on the top right. Each album on the following page requires a password. The current password is: TimelineRocks!
***PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not share this password with anyone outside of our community. We do NOT want to lose this resource, but if it is shared without Rebekah's written permission, they may be removed again.

4. As a final option, if all of the above are unsuccessful, you might consider recording your tutor with your phone as she demonstrates in class each week.

:)

Garabou Boys

Message From Roman Deiter:

Garabou boys are boys sent from their parents at least two cities away at age 4, to live a life of poverty. Their parents hope that by living a life of poverty they will become wealthy, strong Muslim leaders. They are owned by a marabou, who is an esteemed Muslim leader owning Garabou boys. Every morning at 4:00 they go to beg in the streets. They come back at around 5ish and memorize the Koran which is similar to the Bible except there is no grace or love. At about 2:00 they go to sleep until the next day when they repeat.

Some missionaries to Koutiala Mali named the Holsenbacks, have a hospital for the locals and share the gospel to their patients. One day they noticed a Garabou boy walk down the road and collapse right in front of their gate. They were going to bring him in when some of the locals told them that they couldn't touch him without speaking to his master, a marabou. They went with him back to his marabou to ask him if they could help him and the marabou asked, "Would it cost me anything?" They replied saying, "Well yes we do ask for a small fee-" "Forget it!" he thundered. "What if we cover the cost?" they asked. "Sure, whatever!" he blurted. So basically he didn't even care if he lost one. When they started helping the Garabou boy, they realized that the other boys had the same problem. It was then that they found out that their diet was horrible. When they begged they would by chance get a stale piece of bread or maybe some left over coos-coos or some crackers-all carbs. They need protein. To get the boys their daily nutrition, Steve and Heather Holsenback decided to start a Garabou boy time and give the boys the food they need each day. But money went down fast because they were buying food for the Garabou boys. So, they asked people to donate money for the boys. For $0.25 you can give one boy all the nutrition he needs, an egg and handful of peanuts, for one day. So we’ve decided to start a coin drive for the boys. There will be a jar by the coffee machine with ‘Garabou Boys’ written on it. So for every dollar 4 Garabou boys can be fed in one day. Please donate!

We had such a wonderful time with all the ladies that could make it out on Friday night!  Thanks again Donna for hosting and for putting so much thought and love into each and every detail.  I really appreciated getting to know several of you better as we talked about our growing up years, homeschooling, character issues and the GRACE of God.

This weekend I've been pondering the many ways that Christ uses a broken me to raise up these children I call mine.  Reflecting on the stories that were shared I couldn't help but praise God that He has brought us all together this year in community with one another to encourage one another and lift each other up.  Parenting is hard, homeschooling is hard and my character flaws are brought to light more often then I like to admit.  I know I'm not good enough to do this "holy hard work" on my own.  It's through the redemption found only in Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit living in me that I'm able to carry out the calling that He's placed on my heart.   Take courage that though we may not "be enough" He is.

I played this song over and over last week.  The chorus has been an encouragement to me.

If I should speak then let it be
Of the grace that is greater than all my sin
Of when justice was served and where mercy wins
Of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in
Oh to tell you my story is to tell of Him
