Week 10
Fine Arts: Tin Whistle- next week we will make time for solos, and the students can choose which song(s) they perform. Daily practice has been a struggle for all of us, so just keep trying! We are having fun, learning about time signature, octaves, tempo, using cues for keeping time, and how to maintain proper musician posture! They are attentive, and doing well!
Science: Today was great as we learned about the phases of the moon with COOKIES!!
Presentations: We worked on tempo, and giving the words, "Thank you" when finished taking questions/comments from the audience, rather than allowing that awkward silence of walking off the stage.
Geography: CCHappymom from CC Connected
Math: Squares
Latin: Plu-perfect tense (we said it fancy!)
History- song found on CD, tutorial or app!
Keep practicing for those subject master areas!! Parents...work as a team and see how you can both find the answers.
Fine Arts: Tin Whistle is going well! We worked on rhythm, and time signature specifically this week. The students have their booklets in their bags, and they know to practice this week, because we will be doing solos from the booklet next week.
Science Experiment: We worked with Mrs. Perin's class to create a large solar system cross section in the worship center. The students were able to see the cluster of planets before the asteroid belt, and how far the latter 4 planets extended.
Review Grammar: We are really focusing on Geography and Latin this week, and the students are realizing they need to study at home as well. Please consider testing for Memory Masters...I highly recommend the parent's encouragement to each student that they push for a new goal. Subject master is an important step to believing in oneself. Please let me know if we can work together on this goal. I want confidence to soar for each of my students.
They are doing well. Class is fun, and I enjoy each of them so much!!

Presentations:
For the next two weeks, it is suggested that students share how to 'do' or make something for presentations. Each student will have up to 5 minutes to present. Please help and encourage your student to stick within the 5 minute period (normally 2 min) in an effort to give everyone adequate time to present, and allow time for questions.
The class will be divided equally between the next two weeks, with the following students presenting on week 8:
Bryland
Lacey
Elliott
Payton
Week 9 presenters will be:
Esther
Hannah
Claire
Caleb
Thank you for spending time on your research. Remember that props are informative and help keep your audience engaged.
Fine Arts:
Students, please bring your tin whistle to class every week for the following 5 weeks. It is important that you have your whistle each week, so you can participate in class. It is not your parents' responsibility to ensure that you have packed it for class.
*Remember to practice!
WEEK 6:
Science Experiment: I brought in a magnet set so the kids could feel the attraction and repelling forces .They enjoyed that. We used iron filings to demonstrate visually what is invisible to the eye....the magnetic field of the sun. There is a north and south pole, which creates a beautiful circular pattern. Take a look online at some of the images.
Art: We drew a family crest, and discussed various interests our family's hold. We discussed possible meanings for colors, animals, symbols, and some of the children drew crosses, or flags of origin countries. This was a fun project, and I encourage you to continue this process at home!
Presentations: Art presentations were such a hit! Please tell your children "thank you" for being prepared with their creations, and/or their shares. Some children gained more practice on previous weeks art, and others painted or brought resources in. I love the variety!
Review Grammar: We played Family Feud, and each of us found a few things we need to review at home, so we practiced those by writing the correct answers on the mirror in the classroom.
We need to send some prayers to Esther's family. Hopefully you will be back soon, Esther! :) We had a special visitor, Hannah's cousin, to our class, and she was highly engaged with the material we are learning. Hard to believe she is only 6 years old!
Keep the wonder alive, enjoy the process, don't be too hard on yourselves *Mamas!!* and remember to SMILE!
Have a great week off!
WEEK 4:
Science Experiment: This was a blast!! We met together with Mrs. Janell's class again in our classroom, and the pairings with buddies at lower tables worked really well. We had several demonstration techniques, and the children had the chance to test the change that friction made when introduced to our orbit conditions. We discussed Newton's 1st Law, and here is a fun animation that my family enjoyed quite a bit. https://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/scenario/newton.htm
Art: Abstract Art...is so intriguing. We talked about how abstract art was criticized because it was not realism, and how some artists now have very realistic portions to their abstract piece. I talked with the children about some very simple pieces of artwork that have sold for a lot of money.
Geography: We used the song and hand motions from CC Happy Mom.
We're getting our groove down, and have a lot of good energy in class! We played a review game for all subjects with basketball, and floor work, including the use of my highly desired stilts to practice math. The teams amazingly tied by the end of the day.
Onward, and let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus! I truly am grateful that we can discuss Him freely in our curriculum!
WEEK 3:
Happy Monday! This last week was jam packed with class photos, but we enjoyed a great circling of themes...we saw a lot of symmetry, order, and proof of God as we persevered through our studies. God just kept showing up in our day, and it is a real treat to use a curriculum where we can bring God into every area.
Science Experiment: We studied Saturn and it's mysterious rings with Mrs. Janell's class.
Art: One of my favorite times of the day...we worked on upside down images, and I tried my best to trick the students along the way. We discussed elements and how our brains may be stuck to begin a drawing, because we are trying to create something "just so" but if we can slow down to "see" the elements...we may surprise ourselves with our abilities.
Presentation: This upcoming week's presentation topic is Historical Presentation. Please print off the file from our home page for more information. The skill we will be working on is, Volume: Speak with appropriate loudness so your audience can hear you.

Science: We chanted aloud in different "silly" voices.
Geography: We located Western European Countries on the map, beginning with a yarn rope representing Portugal, and a song by 3mjensen on CC Connected.
I hope you all have a wonderful week. Consider how to best prepare your child for CC each week, and enjoy the process! It'll never be perfect, but it can be wonderful!
WEEK 2:
Happy Thursday! We had a really fun week. The class worked together in Science with the younger kids in Mrs. Janell's class and we learned about refraction.
Latin: song (Cycle 2 CD)

Week 1
What a beautiful, sunny day we had to kick off our year! Your children were sunny and positive in the classroom as well, and I thank you for modeling to them that learning is a joy! I believe they will value each other and interact well as a class this year!
I displayed Genesis 1:1 at the front of the room, and we discussed that our job as Christian learners is to know God through the areas of Science, History, Latin, Math, English, Geography, Timeline, and Art. Each week, I will endeavor to have a Bible verse or song chorus displayed to remind us of what our focus is to be. It helps me as well as each person who enters our room.
Please review the Presentation guide on our home page as well as the wealth of other information for your benefit, including Ephesians 6 copywork, etc. I will not be posting the Presentation topic for the following week, but I do expect the kids to focus on preparation and the skill which is paired with the topic each week. For example, week 2 highlights the skill of confidence: To trust and rely in God to boldly share your message. I don't know if the kids picked up on it, but we talked about boldness a few times in other subjects, such as using bold lines in art. Narrate or act out a Bible story or children's book using pictures or props. We want to deliver our messages well, and I look forward to Presentations every week. Please delight in this time of preparation, and aim to put it in your school schedule on Monday, perhaps! I have often been guilty of waiting until the night before....and nobody needs that scramble, so I'm preaching to myself as well! :)
It is my desire to make this year enjoyable, but also a year of growth for each child. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. I partner with you, the teacher, to make this a great learning year!
Here is our week in Review:
Art: We discussed Oils and created an image from my step by step example, one element at a time. We discussed the unique form that a circle can take on....and created a dragon. I will keep most of your child's artwork in the classroom until the presentation night.
*For next week...IF you have a photo of your child's face...preferably a close up, and you don't mind it being used/cut/folded...please send it in to class for our mirror image art. This is optional. I will have other supplies to use as well.
Science Experiment: We went outside to discuss the scientific method, differences in temperature based on various locations on the planet..mountains and trees provide shade, for example, so we demonstrated that with thermometers. Also, we had fun running in circles as the children learned why some satellites "appear" stationary in space.
*For next week...please send your child's science book from last year, or you can pay about $1 for a new one this week. No problem.
Science: Biomes CCC user: Karla Bicknese "Oh Give Me a Home"
Latin: Present Tense __O
Mental prompt: When someone gives you a present, you often say "O!"
Plural is ___mus (mental prompt: "OH--I got a present for Christmas/mus!"
CCC song user: swys
Math: We did funny arm movements and physical taps against the wall to practice 1s, 2s.
Timeline: same motions as last year
History: Using ASL motions, 800 (middle finger and thumb touch for 8), letter C for hundred, medieval (draw a castle up symmetrically with your hands outside of your temples, and loop up to meet hands above head). Pope (draw hands above head like a pope's hat) Leo (letter L) III (3 fingers) crowned (place a crown on your head) Charlemagne (letter C) Holy Roman Emperor (letter E coming across chest as a sash to represent royalty) Europe (letter e). I realized during class that is too many motions, so mainly focus on 800, III, Charlemagne, and Emperor and Europe. :)
Geography: Continents (chanting, ending with "these are the continents" and Oceans (3 Blind Mice)
English Grammar: 8 Parts of Speech song on Essentials blog (if you need the link please let me know)

I look forward to getting to know each of you, and I'm pleased to introduce you to my family. This is our family's 9th year of homeschooling, and we have just graduated our oldest son a year ago! My husband, Steve, works from home in the international and domestic shipping/freight industry, and he is definitely an involved family man! Our children are Nicholas (19), Claudia (11), Claire (9), Nathan (4.5) and Corey (4.5)...twins! We love the Lord, and have had some amazing testimonies of His Faithfulness, and Goodness. I taught Physical Education for 6 classes each day at a local private school, and am now have the privilege of working online as a nutrition and fitness coach, which is a lifelong passion of mine to help others create change in their lives. With a focus on how the body sends feedback to the brain, I always incorporate a lot of movement in my classes!
Our first community day is Thursday, September 8th. I would like to share a few important classroom details for the upcoming year. Our class will meet in Room 13. Please feel free to have your child drop off their backpack and snack before assembly if they like. Our parent helpers for the year are Mrs. Brown and Mrs. B. Smith. They will be involved each week, assisting your child in the classroom and helping to maximize tutoring efforts! They will ensure classroom management according to BGCC's policies. I am very grateful for their efforts and the experience they will be bringing to class this year! We will all be gracious with one another, and lift one another up as members of the body of Christ.

SNACKS: We will have a time for snacks each morning. Please send your child with a simple snack (2-3 non crumbly items) and a water bottle, clearly marked with their name.
PRESENTATIONS: Presentations are an important part of the Classical Communications program. They are a great opportunity to gain confidence and build important skills. Each child will be strongly encouraged to participate in our weekly presentations, and I hope to help make this time to be a highlight of each child's year. The suggested 2016-2017 Presentation schedule can be found on the home page of this blog. The same schedule will be used by all tutors on the BGCC campus.
There is no need to prepare for the first week's presentation, as it will be an impromptu interview by your children's tutors. For the following weeks, early preparation for weekly presentations is encouraged to help your child feel confident and comfortable when it is his/her time to present. They can practice their presentation at home to siblings, parents, grandparents, pets, or even stuffed animals. If the week's presentation is 'Show and Tell' please be sure that the item they are bringing is small enough to fit in their backpack in order to keep disruptions during class at a minimum.
EMAILS & UPDATES: All parent/teacher correspondence for the JOURNEYMAN B class will be posted here, on the blog. I will update JOURNEYMAN B tab in the top menu of the home page with a recap of the previous community day after class each week, by Saturday @ midnight, as per our campus-wide tutor policy.
I am eagerly preparing for the upcoming CC year here at home. If you have any issues or information you'd like me to take into consideration as I prepare for the upcoming year, (allergies, learning issues, personality traits, etc) please let me know. I can be reached via email at spabecki@gmail.com, or by phone/text @ 360-909-1471.
Thank you for allowing me this time with your child. It is my privilege to share in their learning and bring out their strengths in the class setting. It is my commitment to pray for your child and partner with YOU for success in teaching at home!
Warmly,
Mrs. Neuman
