MASTERS B - Mrs. Perin

W.E.E.K  E.I.G.H.T

Presentations:

Claudia taught the class how to knit this week in presentations. I was especially entertained by the 2 boys that stated they would NOT be participating in such activities (who shall remain nameless, but are pictured above - and Noah is not one of them.)  until I assured them that they would, in fact, be doing so.

The ball-blocking-blur of Roman as he demonstrates his goalie abilities for presentations.
None of us got a ball past him.

Next week's presenters of how to 'do' or make something, (5 min) will be:

Joey
Ethan
Rylen
Evelyn

**As a reminder for presentations, students will be held to a strict 2 minute presenting time to ensure that everyone be given adequate time to present. It would be very appreciated if parents could help their child practice staying within the allotted time frame before community day.

Fine Arts:

Continue to practice your D scale, as well as the Mary Had a Little Lamb that was sent home with you this week. Remember that we will be performing Silent Night for the Christmas Presentation Night, and I will have the music posted here on the blog SOON.

New Grammar:

Here is a fun video (found by Mrs. Davis) that I shared in class this week, in addition to a song from CCC by user Amybloodworth

W.E.E.K  S.E.V.E.N

Presentations:
For the next two weeks, it is suggested that students share how to 'do' or make something for presentations. Each student will have up to 5 minutes to present. Please help and encourage your student to stick within the 5 minute period (normally 2 min) in an effort to give everyone adequate time to present, and allow time for questions.
The class will be divided equally between the next two weeks, with the following students presenting on week 8:

Noah
Roman
Claudia
Halle

Week 9 presenters will be:

Joey
Ethan
Rylen
Evelyn

Thank you to Halle, Joey, and Ethan for well researched and presented presentations last week. Your props were informative and helped keep your audience engaged.

Fine Arts:

Students, please bring your tin whistle to class every week for the following 5 weeks. It is important that you have your whistle each week, so you can participate in class. It is not your parents' responsibility to ensure that you have packed it for class.
*Remember to practice your D scale this week so the last note is smooth and well-timed, as well as 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'.

W.E.E.K T.H.R.E.E

After a brief discussion regarding MM goals for this year, I am sharing everyone's plans for memorization of memory work.

Memory Master Trainees:
Halle Morse
Evelyn Lo
Claudia Neuman
Rylen Smith
Roman Deiter

Subject Master Trainees:
Joey Perin - Math and History
Ethan Davis - Science

Presentations:

Next week's presentation suggestion is:

HISTORICAL PRESENTATION - Your Choice
Choose any person from the timeline(or event related to a person. Tell interesting facts about them, learn about their spiritual impact for good or bad, and why or why you do not agree with what they stood for.

New Grammar

We drilled New Grammar with the Help of CC's History and Latin songs, and the addition of my debut as a singer/songwriter. Honestly, I had no intention of sharing my Geography song on the blog, but I have received over SIX requests to upload it here. So I will humor them, since I know they appreciate my raw talent, and have no intention of laughing at my expense. ;) Please note the impressive hold time of the last note.

Art

Upside down images: Knights and Castles

We discovered that keeping our papers upside down while drawing is a challenge, as our brain naturally wants us to turn the paper. Some of us had more trouble than others keeping our papers upside down and focusing on the individual elements of OiLs to help us complete our drawing, bu the kids enjoyed this quick artistic challenge.

Review Game

We played a fun new game of "Solo Cup Castle" in class last week. The goal was to create the largest castle by collecting cups for every right review answer, or collecting ping pong balls to knock down the opposing team's castle. Congratulations boys, on your last minute castle knock-down!

Until next week!

W.E.E.K. T.W.O.

If you were to ask the boys what the highlight of class was this week, I am sure they would tell you humbly, (not) that they were successful in taking the title of Review Game Masters away from the girls....while technically, it's now tied up. ;)  Massive kudos to everyone for their mad review skills, and spelling efforts!

REMINDERS FOR WEEK 2 COMMUNITY DAY:

1. Look pretty y'all, cuz it's PICTURE DAY! Please print the order form on the homepage of the blog (one per family) if you will be purchasing images this year.

2. Please remind your student to bring their art homework to class this week (If they decided to take one to work on) so it can go in their art portfolios.

PRESENTATIONS:
Miss Halle shares her very interesting book, 'Finding Winnie'

*Next week's suggested presentation can be found on our blog homepage, but will also be listed here on the MASTERS B page.

RECITATION: BIBLE PASSAGE
Memorize and recite a Bible passage and share why it is meaningful to you. You could also share who wrote it , who it was written to. If you want, look up some words in the Greek or Hebrew and share what they mean.

Skill to work on: Eye Contact. Look at each member of the audience in order to make them feel special and to prepare their hearts for the message you have to share.

NEW GRAMMAR:

The majority of this week's New Grammar was super easy for my class of teen geniuses. We drilled our English using the song that most Essentials students in our community are familiar with, which is listed as a video on this post on the Essentials page at the 0:46 mark.

To help us remember the European Waters in Geography, we created this mnemonic:

Nice                        North Sea
Boys                       Baltic Sea
Are                         Adriatic Sea
Exceptionally           English Channel
Mature                    Mediterranean Sea

ART: We greatly amused ourselves this week, as we learned about how our brains see images and interpret what we see based on our individual brain dominance, We practiced observing images by the OILS they are made up of, and attempted to replicate mirrored half-images using both sides of our brains.

     Not bad, Miss Rylen!

 Until next week!

W.E.E.K. O.N.E.

Hello Parents of the Elder Master's Class,

Week one is under our belts, and it was just as entertaining and exciting as I imagined. I thoroughly enjoy teaching dramatic, emotional, humorous...and WISE pre-teens. While the majority of our time in class consisted of learning when it was appropriate to speak, and what the proper response to losing a review game to the opposing female team might be, we did manage to run right on schedule, which was impressive for the first day of class with such boisterous, brilliant students.

REMINDERS FOR WEEK 2 COMMUNITY DAY:

As a community wide practice this year, we will be re-using our Nature Journals from last cycle, and would appreciate your student bringing theirs to class next week. *If you no longer have your child's journal, or cannot find it, please let their tutor know so that a replacement (with a cost of $1/book) may be secured post-haste.

Also, if your Masters B student will not be attempting to achieve the prestigious title of Memory Master this cycle, I will be highly encouraging them to pick 1 (or 2, if desired) subjects to master for the respected title of SUBJECT Master. Perhaps speaking with your student and deciding on a subject together before next week would be helpful. The Masters students are highly capable of memorization, and will feel a sense of accomplishment at mastering even one subject this year.

PRESENTATIONS: A couple students had a presentation prepared, while the remainder of the class shared the answers to (interesting) questions asked by their classmates.

*Next week's suggested presentation can be found on our blog homepage, but will also be listed here on the MASTERS B page.

EXPOSITION: HERBIVORE/CARNIVORE/OMNIVORE- HABITAT
Choose an animal to share about. Share if it is an herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. Share what it eats, what type of biome it lives in, and any other fun facts.
Skill to work on: Confidence

REVIEW:
Our review work with a class of this age is pretty straight-forward, but if you have interest, we used the following song in addition to the CC appointed Latin and History songs:

Continents and Oceans by KayleenMalcolm on CCC

ART:
We reviewed the elements of art using OILS. Because this is at least the third time these students have reviewed this material, we added a little Geography into our project this week, and outlined the continents, before filling them with various examples of OILS.

The Masters class would like to thank Miss Morse for her generous contribution to snack time this week. Her creativity and culinary skills were greatly appreciated by all. <3

 Until next week!

M   E   E  T       Y  O  U  R     T  U  T  O  R :

Mrs. Perin

Hello! My name is Amanda Perin, and I am the Masters B tutor this year at BGCC. I am super excited to be a part of your homeschool year and cannot wait to learn all about my new students! We are going to have a great year of learning together!

Before I jump into the specifics of our class, I'd like to share a little about my family and I for those that do not know us. My husband, Joe, and I have been married for 15 years. He is a chiropractor with a family practice in Vancouver. We have 4 children: Joey, (12) Reagenne (10) Scarlett (7) and Georgia (3). We are beginning our 8th year of homeschooling, and our third year at BGCC. We are nature lovers that enjoy spending time outside exploring, hiking, camping, fishing, going on nature walks and caring for our many animals on our 'mini farm' in Battle Ground.

Our first community day is coming right up, (Sept 8th) and I would like to share a few important classroom details for the upcoming year. My parent helper for the year is Mrs. Lo. (As well as a possible 'floating' helper, to be determined) She  will be present each week to assist your child in the classroom while helping to maximize tutoring efforts and ensure classroom management according to BGCC's policies. I am very grateful for her efforts and the experience she will be bringing to class this year!

Your child may be interested in seeing who will be in their class this year. Our class will be made up of:

  • Joey Perin
  • Noah Langeliers
  • Halle Morse
  • Ethan Davis
  • Evelyn Lo
  • Rylen Smith
  • Roman Deiter
  • Claudia Neuman

SCHEDULE:

          9:00 -    9:20             Assembly
          9:20 -    9:50             Presentations
          9:50 -  10:20             New Grammar
         10:20 - 10:50             Science
         10:50 - 11:20             Art
         11:20 - 11:50             Review
         11:50 - 12:00             Clean-up
         12:00 - 12:20             Lunch

SUPPLIES: Please make sure that your child brings 3 sharpened pencils, a package of fine tip dry-erase markers, and a box of magic eraser pads (without added cleaners) to contribute to the year's class supplies. I recommend that your child include a 2 pocket folder in his/her backpack to safely bring home any paperwork.

SNACKS: Snack time will be at 9:50 each morning. Please send your child with a simple snack (2-3 low mess items) and a water bottle, clearly marked with their name.

PRESENTATIONS: Presentations are an important part of the Classical Communications program. They are a great opportunity to gain confidence and build important skills. Each child will be strongly encouraged to participate in our weekly presentations, which are scheduled to begin in our class directly after Assembly this year. The suggested  2016-2017 Presentation schedule can be found on the home page. The same schedule will be used by all tutors on the BGCC campus, but is simply a suggestion. Parents may opt for different topics at any time.

There is no need to prepare for the first week's presentation, as it will be an impromptu interview by your children's tutors. For the following weeks, early preparation for weekly presentations is encouraged to help your child feel confident and comfortable when it is his/her time to present. They can practice their presentation at home to siblings, parents, grandparents, pets, or even stuffed animals. If the week's presentation is 'Show and Tell'  please be sure that the item they are bringing is small enough to fit in their backpack in order to keep disruptions during class at a minimum.

EMAILS/UPDATES: All parent/teacher correspondence for the Masters B class will be posted here, on the blog. I will update the MASTERS B tab in the top menu of the home page with a recap of the previous community day after class each week, by Saturday @ midnight, as per our campus-wide tutor policy. All updates will be current by Sunday morning.

I am eagerly preparing for the upcoming CC year here at home. If you have any issues or information you'd like me to take into consideration as I prepare for the upcoming year, (allergies, learning issues, personality traits, etc) please let me know. I can be reached via email at Amanda@BalancedLivingVancouver.com, or by phone/text @ 509.220.9205

Thank you for allowing me this time with your child. I pray that each child grows and benefits through their time at CC this year, and I look forward to being a part of their experience! Welcome to our class!
Blessings to you all!

Mrs. Perin
