ABECEDARIAN A - Mrs. Sorensen

WEEK 17:

Hey Parents!  It was so fun this last week watching the kids get excited about sharing the "love" in giving valentines to one another.  Our kids are so blessed with such a precious community to learn and grow with.  They also had a BLAST painting with really thick paint and using a new technique and leaving brush strokes in their paintings.  Their portfolios are filling up fast, I can't wait for you to see them at the end of the year.

Presentation: This upcoming week's presentation topic is "Show and Tell: your choice".  Who gave it to you?  What does it look like?  Where/when did you get it?  Why do you like it? Skill is Articulation.  Speak clearly so your audience can understand you.

WEEK 16:

Hey Parents! Last week was so fun as we painted our landscapes and talked about different techniques, styles, and ways we could all make our original masterpieces.  We also enjoyed leaning about Newton's first law of motion and putting it to the test.  I love seeing the kids as they think through and give their guesses to what they think will happen when we do our experiments.

A few important REMINDERS for this upcoming week*

1) This week we are sharing Valentine's with our friends, so don't forget to bring yours to share and a paper bag or ziplock to bring them home in.

2) This Friday Night is our BG Community Renaissance Banquet ($20 a family) and it is encouraged to dress up, so get your costumes together for Friday night and drop your money off in the provided envelope on Thursday!!!

3) During the banquet we will have a microphone available and everyone will get a chance at being the Jester! The kids (and adults) are encouraged to share clean silly jokes. Be sure to pick one out and practice so you are ready to share!

I've listed below some of the ways we practiced our week of New Grammar information.  The Timeline song, Latin songs, Math songs, & History songs can be found on your CC Cycle 2 Audio CD's.  I also used some hand motions and jingles that I found on CC connected and the usernames are listed. As always, If you have any questions or need more details please let me know via text or e-mail.  Happy Monday, prayed over you all today and praying that God is doing mighty things in your home and in your homeschooling this week!

Presentation: This upcoming week's presentation topic is "Make or Do something" (Up to 5 minutes).  Show and tell us how to make or do something.  Our entire class will be participating this week as they tend to struggle even making it to the 5 minute mark, so I think we will have plenty of time.  You will have next week OFF of presentations!  The skill we will be working on is Poise: Be calm, cool, and collected.  Stand tall and still.  Calmly and confidently continue, even if something goes wrong.

M   E   E   T       Y   O   U   R       T   U   T   O   R:

Mrs. Sorensen

Hi there! My name is Janell Sorensen, and I am the Abecedarian A tutor at BGCC.  This is my third year tutoring this 4-5 year old age group and I am so excited to meet and have your son/daughter in my class for the 2016-2017 school year!

First, a little bit about my family and I. My husband, David, and I have been married for 14 years. He is an Independent General Contractor and God has graciously allowed Sorensen Construction to be in business for 13 years serving the Clark & Cowlitz County specifically.  We have been blessed with 5 children: Payton (9) Ethan (7) Morgan (5) Landon (4) and Emmalyn (1). We are beginning our sixth year of homeschooling and our third year at BGCC. First and foremost we love our Lord.  We also love the great outdoors, having a dance party randomly in the kitchen, telling jokes & laughing together.   I'm also adjusting to farm life on our 10 acres in Woodland (where my hubby grew up) and are loving our cows and the room to run!

Our first community day is coming right up, (Sept 8th) and I would like to share a few important classroom details for the upcoming year.  We have one scheduled bathroom break for this age group during Foundations, however if you can be sure to take them before CC starts, that will help us as we stay the course in class.  Thank you!  Our parent helpers for the year are Mrs. Bronwyn Deiter, and Mrs. Amber Langliers. They will be present each week to assist your child in the classroom while helping to maximize tutoring efforts and ensure classroom management according to BGCC’s policies. I am very grateful for their efforts and the experience they will be bringing to class this year!

Your child may be interested in seeing who will be in their class this year. Our class will be made up of:

• Simon Langliers
• Grace Ordway
• Louisa Deiter
• Corey Neuman
• Scarlett Morse
• Landon Sorensen
• Esme' Stahley
• Drew Rodriguez

SCHEDULE:

          9:00 -    9:15             Assembly
          9:15 -    9:50             New Grammar
          9:50 -  10:20             Science
         10:20 - 10:50             Snack/Presentation
         10:50 - 11:20             Review Grammar
         11:20 - 11:50             Art
         11:50 - 12:00             Clean-up
         12:00 - 12:20             Lunch

SUPPLIES: If there is any way you can contribute to our class supply list by bringing any of the following, that would be a HUGE blessing as we use these items weekly.   Fine tip dry erase markers, white board spray cleaner, Magic eraser pads or diaper wipes.  Thank you!

SNACKS: We will have snack time at 10:20 each morning. Please send your child with a simple snack (2-3 low mess items) and a water bottle, clearly marked with their name.

PRESENTATIONS: Presentations are an important part of the Classical Communications program. They are a great opportunity to gain confidence and build important skills. Each child will be strongly encouraged to participate in our weekly presentations, which are scheduled to begin in our class at 10:30am this year. The suggested 2016-2017 Presentation schedule can be found on the home page. For our age group I encourage that you try to have your child follow the suggested presentation schedule, but the goal is that they would get up and learn to feel comfortable in front of their peers.  So if “show and tell” is what they want to do here or there, by all means do it.  There is a ton of freedom in presentation subject just as long as there is intention in preparing and presentation.  We want them {and you} to enjoy this part of CC and not dread it.  The same recommended schedule will be used by all tutors on the BGCC campus.

There is no need to prepare for the first week's presentation, as it will be an impromptu interview by your children's tutors. For the following weeks, early preparation for weekly presentations is encouraged to help your child feel confident and comfortable when it is his/her time to present. They can practice their presentation at home to siblings, parents, grandparents, pets, or even stuffed animals. If the week's presentation is 'Show and Tell'  please be sure that the item they are bringing is small enough to fit in their backpack in order to keep disruptions during class at a minimum.

EMAILS/UPDATES: All parent/teacher correspondence further on for the Abecedarian A class will be posted on our community blog at this following link http://bgccfoundations.blogspot.com and I will update our class under Homepage> Foundations> Mrs. Sorensen with a recap of the previous community day after class each week along with any announcements or additional information.  Please be sure to save this webpage under your “favorites” and check this often so you can easily have our co-op information, class information, updates, and announcements at your fingertips.

I have already been preparing and I am really excited about this upcoming CC year. If you have any issues or information you'd like me to take into consideration as I prepare (allergies, learning issues, personality traits, etc) please let me know. I can be reached via email at jd_sorensen@yahoo.com, or by phone/text @ 360.518.6976

Thank you for allowing me this time with your child. I pray that CC is a means in which they may know God and make him known.  I look forward to being a part of their experience! Welcome to our class.

Blessings,
Janell Sorensen
